Council Leader's Blog

It became clear very early on at the count on Thursday night that something incredible had happened. Our sampling operation revealed we had won all but two polling districts in Ealing Central & Acton. We won Ealing Common, Ealing Broadway and Hanger Hill. We laughed in disbelief as the pre-result analysis revealed we would win a 12,500 majority. In fact it was 13,807.

Acton_FGM_Clinic.jpgThere has unfortunately been a number of inaccurate media reports on this subject, which as a council we have sought to correct. While we very much value the work that the clinic does and have sought to establish a good working relationship with them, Ealing Council has never been a direct funder or commissioner of the clinic; nor have we received a request for funding. It is inaccurate, therefore, to suggest that the council is closing the clinic, either directly or indirectly.

In today's Guardian I have responded to the Prime Minister's  scurrilous attack on Ealing Council regarding adult social care. Read the full letter below and please share wildly to let other residents know the facts:

Well the summer break is well a truly over and the hard work of running Ealing Council under a Tory government is back with a vengeance, testing myself and local Labour councillors to the full. We recently met as a group to talk about both the tough budget challenges we face but also about our Labour values and how we would use them to mitigate the cuts and shape our vision for Ealing in 2018. It was both sobering and exciting.

The General Election was a bitter sweet night for the Labour Party in Ealing. Obviously we were delighted to see all the Ealing Parliamentary constituencies return Labour MPs especially the election for the first time of Dr Rupa Huq in the highly marginal Ealing Central and Acton seat but this local euphoria was set against the massive disappointment of the national result.

This week we will have our annual debate on the council’s corporate plan; this is the document that outlines what the council will be doing over the coming year. It also looks at what we’ve achieved since the local elections last year.  It shows that we’ve delivered on our key promises to build more council homes, provide more apprenticeships, invested in new lighting and increased recycling.

At an NHS Rally held over the bank holiday weekend in Acton, Labour's Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham announced that a Labour Government will immediately halt further changes to the NHS in north west London until a full consultation, based on clinical need rather than budget pressures has taken place.

money.jpgNext week we will pass our budget for 2015/16 and we will freeze local resident’s council tax  bills for the 7th year running. Since Labour took power in 2010 bills have not gone up by one  penny. We know that people are suffering from the disastrous economic policies of this Tory-  led Government. The cost of living crisis is hitting residents across the borough and by  freezing bills we are doing our bit to help.

Ealing Council is currently being forced to take some very difficult decisions as we struggle to balance our budget and deal with £183m cuts that are being imposed on us by the Tory led government (let's not forget the LibDems who are holding the Tories coats as they pummel local government). These agonising decisions are being made even more difficult by the cynical and callous spin of the Tories nationally and locally. Their well deserved reputation as the nasty party is something they are desperately trying to cover up in the run up to the General Election on 7 May and they are telling some huge whoppers and also posing as the friends of the vulnerable when they themselves are responsible for the desperate choices Labour are faced with locally.
