Tories soft on Crime and the causes of Crime
By Cllr Ranjit Dheer (12/8/11)
Ealing Conservatives have claimed in a full council meeting that police numbers in London will increase by approx 920 by next year.
On Thursday 21st July 2011, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Constabulary (HMIC) spelt out the ‘estimated impact of government spending cuts’ as reported in the Ealing Gazette.
The HMIC report indicates that by 2014/15, MET Police numbers will fall by 1907, PCSO numbers will be cut by 920 and civilian staff reduced by 374.
This is a total reduction of all police personnel by 3253. These are people who keep our streets and neighbourhoods safe. These reductions will clearly affect police and PCSO numbers in Ealing, although we do not know the exact number. But one thing is beyond dispute: that there will be fewer Police and PCSOs patrolling our streets in the next few years.
This comes on top of five sergeant posts, which will disappear from our Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Elsewhere, the MET Police reported a 15% jump in robberies, burglaries and street muggings in the Capital in the past 12 months.
Crime and Fear of Crime remains one of the top 5 concerns of our residents in Ealing. But the government is travelling in the opposite direction by imposing substantial cuts in Police and PCSOs numbers.
Is the Tory Government going soft on crime and soft on the causes of crime?
