Letter to Ocado from Cllrs Mason and Mahfouz

Councillors Peter Mason, Leader of the Council, and Bassam Mahfouz, Cabinet Member for Decent Living Incomes, have written to Ocado with their concerns about the treatment of workers at the Ocado depot in Stirling Road, Acton.

After meeting delivery drivers – members of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain, or IWGB – councillors were alarmed to hear about insecure employment practices and the use of an agency to undercut wages.

Delivery drivers have played a vitally important role in keeping our borough and our city moving during the pandemic, and should not be facing the worst excesses of a gig economy where workers are classed as independent contractors to avoid giving them basic rights and access to things like sick pay.

Ealing Labour is committed to creating good, decently paid jobs. Without union recognition for the IWGB and good faith negotiation there is a real danger that Ocado will continue to fall short of that in Ealing.
