Ealing council Housing cabinet member Cllr Hitesh Tailor, has today outlined plans to build more Council homes in Ealing over the next four years. New figures released today from the House of Commons Library show that Labour-run Councils in London have built five times as many Council homes as Conservative run Councils since 2010.

Cllr Tailor, said:

Under this Government, the housing crisis in London continues to worsen. As a Labour council, we can’t simply stand by as waiting lists continue to grow, rents continue to rise and overcrowding worsens for many families on low incomes.

We’re committed to building 500 council  homes locally over the next four years and this shows our commitment to tackling the housing crisis head on – it will also give a boost to the struggling construction industry.

If we don’t take action now, more households will be forced into substandard and overcrowded accommodation -; playing into the hands of rogue landlords and causing more hardship for those on the lowest incomes.

The housing crisis is the biggest challenge facing London today. With the Government in denial, it’s Labour councils that are taking action to deal with the crisis. London desperately needs more homes – not just to deal with soaring rents and overcrowding, but to create much needed jobs in the construction industry.

London cannot become a city where only the wealthiest are able to live, and the commitment of Labour councils like Ealing will be crucial in dealing with the crisis over the coming year.
